Why do car accidents occur?

On Behalf of Ellis Law Offices LLP | Dec 4, 2023 | Motor Vehicle Accidents

Car accidents are unfortunately a common occurrence on our roads, often resulting in injuries, property damage and even fatalities.

While operating a vehicle responsibly can help you avoid many accidents, there are some situations out of your control. This is especially true when other motorists behave carelessly behind the wheel, which can cause a serious collision.

Distracted driving

Distracted driving occurs when motorists divert their attention from the road, usually to use their phones, eat or engage in other activities. Texting while driving is particularly dangerous, as it takes a driver’s eyes off the road for an extended period. Consider that distracted driving caused the death of 3,522 individuals in 2021 alone, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Speeding

Exceeding the speed limit or driving too fast for road conditions is another factor contributing to car accidents. Speeding reduces a driver’s reaction time, making it harder to respond to unexpected situations. It also increases the seriousness of crashes, which can cause severe injuries.

Driving under the influence

Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs poses a major threat to road safety. Impaired drivers have reduced coordination, impaired judgment and slower reaction times, making them more likely to cause accidents. Strict adherence to laws prohibiting impaired driving is essential to reduce the prevalence of these incidents.

Reckless driving

Reckless driving involves aggressive and careless behavior on the road. Tailgating, changing lanes without signaling and ignoring traffic signals are examples of reckless driving. Such actions can lead to collisions and endanger the safety of both the driver and others on the road.

Weather conditions

Adverse weather conditions, such as rain and snow, contribute to a significant number of yearly accidents. Reduced visibility and slippery roads can make it challenging to control a vehicle, leading to collisions. Drivers must adjust their speed and driving habits according to the current weather conditions to minimize the risk of accidents.

Failure to obey traffic signals

Disregarding traffic signals, especially running red lights, is a dangerous behavior that often results in T-bone collisions and intersection accidents. Drivers should remain vigilant and adhere to traffic signals to avoid these types of accidents.

In the event you experience an accident, remain calm and take the necessary steps. You can also follow up with your insurance provider to seek compensation for any injuries or property damage you experience as a result.
