3 common injuries from a slip-and-fall accident

On Behalf of Ellis Law Offices LLP | Mar 26, 2024 | Slip And Fall

While some people may brush off slip-and-fall incidents as minor mishaps, the reality is that they can lead to serious injuries that impact one’s quality of life. Recognizing the risks associated with these accidents will help you identify the signs of injuries early to seek treatment as soon as possible.

There are a few common injuries to watch for after slip-and-fall accidents.

1. Broken bones

Broken bones are one of the most frequent injuries sustained in slip-and-fall accidents. It is a natural instinct to reach out and try to catch yourself when you fall. This often leads to fractures in the wrist, arm or ankle. In more severe cases, it can also lead to hip fractures, which are particularly dangerous for older adults.

2. Soft tissue damage

Slip-and-fall accidents can also cause significant soft tissue damage, such as sprains, strains and contusions. These injuries occur when the body’s muscles, ligaments and tendons get stretched or torn due to the sudden impact of the fall. Soft tissue injuries can be extremely painful and may limit an individual’s mobility and ability to perform daily tasks. Recovery times vary depending on the severity of the damage, with some cases requiring physical therapy or even surgery.

3. Knee injuries

The knees are particularly vulnerable in slip-and-fall accidents, as they often bear the brunt of the impact when an individual falls forward. Common knee injuries include torn ligaments, such as the anterior cruciate ligament or medial collateral ligament, and damage to the meniscus, the cartilage that cushions the knee joint. These injuries can be debilitating and may require extensive medical treatment, including surgery and prolonged rehabilitation, to restore proper function and alleviate pain.

Prevention and early intervention are key to ensuring a full recovery and maintaining overall well-being after a slip-and-fall accident.
