Summertime is the perfect time to embrace the open road on your motorcycle. Unfortunately, this is also the time when you are more likely to suffer from a serious injury.

Motorcycles are inherently more dangerous than cars. Fortunately, there are a few things that you can do to make sure you stay safe on your motorcycle.

Take a course

Almost everyone can benefit from a solid riding course. Laws and safety rules change. It is always good to keep up with current information. You could also get a discount on your insurance when you take one in Massachusetts.

Wear safety gear

The proper safety gear can save your life in an accident. You should wear:

  • Helmet
  • Mesh motorcycle jacket suitable for summer
  • Face shield or eye protection
  • Gloves
  • Boots

You should wear at least these pieces of motorcycle gear.

Watch out for the heat

One issue with riding in the summertime is the heat. Make sure your riding gear is lightweight and protective. Remember you have the heat from the engine, the road and the summer sun to deal with. Drink plenty of fluids to avoid dehydration.

Stop often, use electrolytes and be sure to cool down when you can. This can help you avoid conditions that may result in an accident.

Check the weather and road conditions

Weather and road conditions change from day to day. Make sure you look at the conditions you might encounter on your ride.

Riding a motorcycle in the summertime is a very enjoyable experience, but ignoring basic safety can result in severe injuries or death.
