Caring for your family member with a TBI

On Behalf of Ellis Law Offices LLP | Jan 18, 2023 | Injuries, Personal Injury

Traumatic brain injuries can create many challenges that could complicate life for their victims. Watching someone you love cope with the sudden and dramatic impact of a TBI can be heart-wrenching.

Knowing how to care for your family member and how to provide needed support can make a difference in both of your experiences. Your careful approach may strike the perfect balance of support and encouragement.

Show empathy

Given the fragility and sensitivity of the human brain, even a mild TBI could produce some changes that require rehabilitative therapy. According to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, a TBI could impact cognitive activity, emotional processing and physical aptitude. Your willingness to show empathy and exhibit patience can make a considerable difference in your interactions with your loved one.

Prioritize routines

Brain injuries interfere with a person’s processing abilities which could complicate everyday tasks as simple as brushing teeth. Having a good routine will establish consistency for your family member. You can adjust as needed, but for the time being, find a routine that enables your loved one to focus on one thing at a time.

Meet your needs

One of the biggest challenges of caretaking is burnout. Make time for yourself. Ensure you have all your needs met. Get enough rest. Take breaks to socialize with friends. Stay active. Eat a well-balanced diet and drink plenty of water. Self-care will give you the motivation and energy you need to remain a steadfast support to your loved one.

There is no one-size-fits-all approach for TBI recovery. Your diligence in providing support and collaborating with medical professionals can facilitate success and recovery for your loved one.
