Why do workplace slip and fall accidents happen?

On Behalf of Ellis Law Offices LLP | Feb 17, 2017 | Workers' Compensation

Despite the fact that most employers and employees do their best to prevent workplace slip and fall accidents, this remains a major problem throughout the country.

As a worker, you never want to be injured on the job. If you are, this could change your life in many ways. Not only could it require long-term treatment, but an injury could alter your financial situation.

One of the best things you can do is learn why these accidents happen. Here are some of the most common causes of slips:

— Wet or oily surface.

— Weather hazard, such as water accumulation in an entryway.

— Loose flooring, such as a rug that has curled.

— Uneven walking surface.

— Defective walking surface.

Here are some of the common causes of trips in the workplace:

— Poor lighting.

— Obstructed view of the ground ahead.

— Clutter on the ground.

— Wrinkled carpet.

— Defective stairs.

As you can see, there are many potential causes of both slips and falls. It only takes one hazard to pop up in order to cause an accident that causes serious injury.

If you find yourself in this position, you should immediately do two things:

— Inform your employer of the accident.

— Receive medical attention.

When you take both these steps, you’ll find it easier to file a workers’ compensation claim with the idea that you’ll quickly receive benefits. If for any reason your claim is denied, you should once again act fast. This time around, you need to file an appeal by providing the insurer with more information on the accident. An attorney can help.
