Massachusetts worker drowns in construction site accident

On Behalf of Ellis Law Offices LLP | Aug 14, 2015 | Workers' Compensation

During the warmer months, it is not uncommon to see construction going on all around Worcester and the rest of Massachusetts. In this busy time of year for the construction industry, fatal accidents may happen at work sites and claim the lives of construction workers. At other times, workplace injury accidents will occur and cause minor or severe harm to a worker. In any case, a workers’ compensation attorney can aid both injured workers and the families of the deceased.

In a recent construction site accident, a worker lost his life after becoming trapped in a water-filled trench. The incident took place at a work site in Longmeadow on July 31, a little before 8:00 a.m. A trench was dug for the project, but an accident happened, which caused the trench to quickly swell with water. Unfortunately, a worker became trapped inside and drowned. Crews were able to recover the body of the deceased worker, but only after several hours. The crews operated slowly due to the delicate nature of the trench, and the fact that it could collapse and cause further damage.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) is investigating the accident. If any type of OSHA violation is found, the worker’s employer could face fines and penalties. The OSHA investigation may also reveal what, exactly, caused the accident that killed the worker.

In deadly workplace accidents, it is crucial for families of the victim to know what happened and why their loved one was fatally injured. A Worcester workers’ comp attorney can look into a construction site accident on behalf of a family and help determine exactly what happened and why.
