Guidelines for workers’ compensation in Massachusetts

On Behalf of Ellis Law Offices LLP | Nov 18, 2024 | Workers' Compensation

Workers’ compensation helps protect employees who suffer injuries or become ill because of their job. In Massachusetts, workers’ compensation provides financial support for medical expenses and lost wages, allowing workers to focus on their recovery without worrying about finances. There are some key guidelines for understanding workers’ compensation in Massachusetts.

Who qualifies for workers’ compensation?

Most employees in Massachusetts qualify for workers’ compensation. This includes full-time, part-time, and even seasonal workers. If you suffer an injury while performing your job duties, you generally qualify for workers’ compensation benefits. These benefits cover a wide range of injuries and illnesses, from workplace accidents to conditions caused by repetitive motion or exposure to harmful substances.

Reporting an injury

If you get injured on the job, report the injury to your employer as soon as possible. You should notify your employer within a certain time frame—ideally immediately after the incident or within a few days. Reporting your injury promptly helps you receive the benefits you deserve. Your employer will then file a claim with their workers’ compensation insurance provider.

Types of benefits available

Workers’ compensation in Massachusetts offers several types of benefits. These include coverage for medical expenses related to your injury, such as doctor visits, medication, and rehabilitation. If you cannot work because of your injury, you may also receive partial wage replacement. In cases of severe injury that leads to long-term disability, you may qualify for additional compensation. The goal is to provide financial assistance while you recover and to help you return to work when you are ready.

Returning to work

Once you have recovered enough to return to work, your employer should help facilitate your return. This may involve adjusting your duties or providing modified work if you cannot yet perform your full job. Workers’ compensation also aims to support injured workers in making a successful transition back into the workplace.

Workers’ compensation protects employees who suffer injuries or become ill due to their job. By knowing what to do, you can navigate the workers’ compensation process and focus on getting back to health.
