5 common construction site accidents

On Behalf of Ellis Law Offices LLP | Jul 11, 2024 | Workplace Accidents And Workers' Compensation

Working in the construction field is dangerous but necessary. Construction workers face hazards daily, and despite safety measures, accidents happen frequently. Understanding these five common construction site accidents can help prevent them and determine what steps to take if they occur.

1. Falls

Falls are one of the most common construction site accidents. Workers often work at great heights on scaffolding, ladders, or roofs. A slip or misstep can lead to severe injuries or even death. Proper safety harnesses and guardrails are essential to prevent falls.

2. Struck by objects

Workers can get hit by falling tools, materials, or debris. These accidents can cause severe injuries, especially if the objects fall from a significant height. Wearing hard hats and ensuring secure storage of materials can reduce these risks.

3. Electrocutions

Construction sites often have exposed wiring and electrical systems. Contact with live wires can lead to electrocution. Proper training and using insulated tools can help prevent these accidents.

4. Caught-in/between accidents

Workers can become trapped in or between large machinery, equipment, or materials. These mishaps can cause crushing injuries. To avoid these hazards, guards, and personnel must be well-trained in safety procedures.

5. Overexertion

Construction work is physically demanding. Overexertion from lifting heavy objects or repetitive motions can lead to injuries like strains and sprains. Proper lifting techniques and taking regular breaks can help prevent these injuries.

Claiming compensation after an injury

You may seek compensation if you acquired an injury while on the job. You may pursue additional compensation if negligence played a role in the accident. You may want to contact a legal professional who can protect your rights and ensure you receive fair compensation for your injuries.
