How to avoid falling victim to ‘crash for cash’ scams

On Behalf of Ellis Law Offices LLP | Feb 16, 2024 | Car Accidents, Motor Vehicle Accidents

When you think you’ve seen it all, a new kind of fraud, known as “crash for cash” scams, is on the rise.

This scam involves fraudsters deliberately causing car accidents to file false insurance claims or make money from unsuspecting motorists. Aside from causing unnecessary financial burdens, these staged accidents are highly dangerous types of fraud that can lead to serious harm to victims.

As a driver, it is important to equip yourself with the knowledge needed to avoid falling prey to these crimes.

Maintain safe driving distances

One common tactic in “crash for cash” scams is braking suddenly for no apparent reason in hopes that your car will rear-end them. These criminals will also often turn off their brake lights so you do not have any warnings of an impending crash. Always maintain a safe following distance to avoid falling victim to this malicious scheme.

Also, beware of vehicles tailgating. Fraudsters may resort to this to provoke a reaction or force an error on your part. If you spot a suspicious car following too closely, remain focused on your driving and safely change lanes or pull over to let them pass.

Consider installing a dashcam

Equipping your car with a dashcam is a valuable investment that can offer a first-hand account of the incident. With this device, you can capture the circumstances leading up to the crash, ultimately protecting you from any potential fraudulent claims.

Avoid confrontation

If you suspect you have fallen victim to a “crash for cash” scam, avoid confrontations with the other driver. These scammers can be aggressive, so it would be wise to keep interactions civil and focus on gathering evidence instead.

Notify the police and your insurance company

Always report car wrecks to the police, especially if you suspect the situation might be a scam. A police report can be an invaluable document to use when dealing with your insurance company.

Furthermore, make sure to immediately inform your insurance provider about the accident and let them know of the suspicions you might have.

Prevention is always the best defense against any kind of scam. By staying vigilant and following safe driving practices, you can stay safe on the road and avoid falling prey to a fraudulent claim.
