How can scaffolding lead to falls on a construction site?

On Behalf of Ellis Law Offices LLP | Sep 28, 2023 | Workplace Accidents And Workers' Compensation

In the realm of construction, scaffolding is an indispensable tool, providing access and support for workers at elevated heights. However, this important part of construction sites can also become a hazard when not used and maintained correctly.

Falls from scaffolding are a leading cause of accidents in the construction industry, with dire consequences for workers.

Insufficient training and oversight

One of the primary factors contributing to scaffolding-related falls is poor training and oversight. Those in charge who fail to impart the necessary knowledge and experience to erect or dismantle put workers at risk.

With almost 1 out of 5 fatal workplace injuries happening in the construction industry in 2021, passing on safety knowledge is a top priority. Proper training is important to ensure that workers understand load limits and secure anchoring.

Inadequate inspection and maintenance

Scaffolding must undergo regular inspection and maintenance to ensure its structural integrity. Neglecting these tasks can lead to accidents.

Damaged or deteriorated scaffolding components can give way unexpectedly, causing workers to plummet to the ground below. Routine inspections by qualified personnel are important for identifying and rectifying potential hazards.

No personal protective equipment

Personal protective equipment plays an important role in preventing falls from scaffolding. Workers must have harnesses, helmets and non-slip footwear when working at elevated heights. Failure of those in charge to give workers these items increases the risk of injury in the event of a fall.

Inadequate guardrails and toe boards

Lack of proper guardrails and toe boards on scaffolding can be a recipe for disaster. These safety features prevent accidental falls and are a critical component of scaffolding design. When missing or improperly installed, workers may lose their balance and tumble off the scaffold.

Adverse weather conditions

Rain, snow or ice can create slippery surfaces on scaffolding, increasing the likelihood of slips and falls. Inadequate precautions to address adverse weather conditions can have catastrophic consequences.

Workers who face injuries may feel confused and overwhelmed by worry after an incident. By addressing dangerous factors that caused a fall, construction sites can become safer environments, reducing the incidence of scaffolding-related falls and their devastating consequences.
