When should you consider vocational rehabilitation?

On Behalf of Ellis Law Offices LLP | May 27, 2023 | Blog, Workplace Accidents And Workers' Compensation

Some workplace injuries can cause permanent limitations that impact your ability to work or get another job. In such cases, resources such as vocational rehabilitation may facilitate your recovery.

Knowing the purpose of rehabilitative therapy and when it can help may aid you in determining your next steps.

You lost critical skills

A serious workplace injury could result in lost skills that were critical to your job performance. With the right help, there may be a chance you could regain these skills. According to Mass.gov, prior to seeking vocational rehabilitation benefits, you must attain medical stability. You will need to work closely with your health care team to determine at what point during your recovery you can safely begin rehabilitation.

Once you receive adequate clearance, your regular attendance at therapy sessions may give you the tools you need to gradually rebuild your skills. The goal of vocational rehabilitation is to help you reach a point where you can operate competitively in the job market.

Your limitations cause interference

Sometimes a severe injury will cause permanent disability. You may lack the mobility to ever regain skills you formerly had. This could make it difficult to secure another job. Vocational rehabilitation can put you in contact with professionals who can help you identify transferable skills that you have. They can assist you in modifying and updating your resume to make it more appealing and impactful for the new types of jobs you want to apply for.

Discuss your interest in rehabilitation with your employer. Find out what your options are for receiving continued treatment beyond the conclusion of medical treatment. With the right support, you may still have the chance to return to the workplace even if not in the same capacity as before.
