How do doctors diagnose spinal cord injures?

On Behalf of Ellis Law Offices LLP | Oct 11, 2021 | Blog, Personal Injury

After suffering harm because of another’s negligence, you have injuries to investigate. You feel twinges of pain in your back. Did you suffer a spinal cord injury?

Mayo Clinic explains how medical professionals diagnose spinal cord harm. Ensure you know the extent of the injuries you suffered and the compensation you deserve.

Computerized tomography scan

CT scans rely on computers to map cross-sectional images of your spinal disks and bones. Your doctor may recommend one if she or he spots an anomaly on your X-rays. The CT scan provides an in-depth look at the abnormality.

X-rays

Expect your doctor to request X-rays of your spine. The diagnostic test allows medical professionals to diagnose tumors, spinal column trauma, spinal degenerative shifts and fractures.

Magnetic resonance imaging

Powerful radio waves and magnetic fields create magnetic resonance images. Computers create pictures of your spinal cord, allowing your physician to spot blood clots and herniated disks. MRIs also help medical professionals to pinpoint masses that may press on your spinal cord.

Examination and inspection

If your personal injury sends you to the emergency room, a doctor may perform an examination or inspection. By asking you about the incident and testing your movement and senses, a health care provider could have enough information to rule out spinal cord harm.

Neurological exam

Once your swelling goes down, you may return to your physician for a complete neurological exam. This gauges your injury’s severity by testing your ability to feel pinpricks and gentle touches.

You cannot afford to go about with an undiagnosed personal injury. Medical exams help build your case and protect your right to fair compensation.
