Crossing the street is something many do in the Boston and Worcester areas every day; most of the time local residents probably aren’t even thinking about this often mundane task. Still, like many other common activities, a walk across the street can be deadly when a negligent driver is involved. Earlier this March a 70-year-old male pedestrian was hit and killed by a suspected drunk driver on Shrewsbury Street. The fatal car accident happened on a Wednesday night a little after 9 p.m. After being hit by the vehicle, the man was taken to a local hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. The car was driven by a 37-year-old woman who is now charged with negligent operation of a car, driving under the influence and motor vehicle homicide. Due to the severity of the situation, the Worcester crash reconstruction unit headed the accident investigation.
During the driver’s arraignment, witnesses noted she had consumed two beers and two shots of whiskey that night. The woman, who works as a bartender, had apparently stayed late after her shift, according to prosecutors. While this case is pending, the woman has been ordered to avoid getting behind the wheel. A look at her driving history reveals she was involved in three different crashes between 1994 and 2013. After the incident the woman was held on a bail of $10,000.
