An accident reconstruction team from the Massachusetts State Police is looking into a tragic wreck that occurred early Sunday morning in Brockton, Massachusetts. Authorities say that a 17-year-old high school junior, who was riding as a passenger in the back seat of a Volkswagen lost her life in the accident. Four other young adults from the same vehicle suffered personal injuries.
Any car accident can be heartbreaking. When young adults are involved, families and entire communities can be devastated. Often, a car accident investigation can seem endless, but learning the facts is a necessary step after a wreck to learn the details that may have caused or contributed to the wreck.
What authorities know at this point is that a group of young adults was returning from a baby shower when the fatal wreck occurred. Police say that the group was traveling in a Volkswagen on Westgate Drive on Brockton shortly after midnight. The driver of the Volkswagen passed an Audi on the left, and a short time later lost control of the car. The Volkswagen slid off the roadway and slammed into a roadside utility pole.
A 17-year-old young woman who was in her high school’s ROTC program was killed in the wreck. Four other occupants of the Volkswagen survived the crash, but sustained personal injuries. Authorities say that the people in the Audi were not injured–police do not think the Audi was involved in the crash at this point of the investigation,
One of the accident victims who survived was airlifted to a Boston, Massachusetts hospital with broken bones. His medical condition is not known. Three other survivors of the wreck reportedly suffered injuries that authorities say are not life-threatening.
News of the wreck spread quickly through the school where the fatal accident victim attended. Officials brought in grief counselors for class mates to speak with on Monday. Reports indicate that roughly 60 students spoke with the counselors, while some students stayed home from school.
