Overlooked yet useful wet weather driving tips

Driving in wet conditions, such as rain, is easier said than done. Sure, this may be something you have experience with, but that doesn’t mean you can’t find yourself in a dangerous situation.

There are many things you can do to prevent an accident in wet weather.

While most people are familiar with common driving techniques, such as slowing down, there are others that can keep you safe. Here are three to consider:

— Don’t use cruise control. While this is something that can provide convenience in dry conditions, it increases the risk of an accident when roadways are wet.

— Leave room between other vehicles. Do your best to leave as much room as possible between your vehicle and the one in front of you. Remember this: It takes longer to slow your car down when the roads are wet.

— Know how to respond to a skid. What will you do if you tires begin to skid? The best step you can take is to continue to steer in the direction you want the car to travel. Also, don’t slam on the brakes as this will make the problem worse.

In an overall sense, the best thing you can do is drive carefully in wet weather. When you follow these points of advice, while also slowing down, you’ll find yourself in much better position.

Unfortunately, just because you know how to drive safe in wet weather doesn’t mean others will follow the same strategy. For this reason, you could be involved in an accident that is no fault of your own.
