Agawam Police say driver in hit-run was under the influence

A man was taking a stroll with his wife along South West Street in Feeding Hills, Massachusetts during the noon-hour last Thursday. Investigators say that the man was struck by a passing motorist, who failed to stop at the scene of the accident. The driver of the car apparently crashed into other items in the area and came to a stop roughly a half-mile from the pedestrian accident scene.

Several people called authorities to report the hit-and-run accident at around 12:15 Thursday afternoon. Emergency responders found the man with serious personal injuries. After receiving medical assistance at the scene of the crash, the man was taken to a hospital in Springfield for more extensive medical care. Authorities say that the wife of the accident victim was not injured.

Agawam police found the Nissan Altima that authorities believe was involved in the pedestrian accident. Officers believe that the driver of the car was driving under the influence at the time of the mid-day incident. Investigators, including an accident reconstruction team, have been looking into the details surrounding the injury accident.

Drunk driving accidents can occur at any time of the day or night. A driver may still be under the influence during the morning commute after binge drinking the night before. Shift workers may be on a different schedule and may be under the influence at times when our culture thinks that people are generally sober. In addition to alcohol-related accidents, a growing number of prescription medication incidents are making headlines.

Alcohol or drug related crashes continue to be significant issues in Massachusetts. While the law prohibits drunk driving, alcohol is involved in far too many crashes. As today’s story highlights, a person may be under the influence in a mid-day crash.
